Salt Lake City was founded in 1847 by Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley seeking a place to practice their religion freely after facing persecution in the eastern United States.

The city’s layout was carefully planned in a grid system with wide streets to accommodate farming and transportation, and Temple Square was established as the spiritual center of the community.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city grew with the arrival of the railroad, mining industries, and settlers from across the country. Salt Lake City played a major role in Utah’s journey to statehood, which was achieved in 1896.
